Essays and commentary by Madeira Desouza preserved from the original claviusdeep.com — covering the story's origins, gay science fiction, time travel theory, and the author's creative journey.

Inside Clavius Deep

What's Clavius Deep About? In the year 2251, an international consortium named MMDI operates from Clavius Base, a top-secret facility hidden deep within the crater Clavius. Time travel agents are sent back to various points in Earth's history to repair timelines and prevent societal collapse—the prime purpose of time travel.

Behind the Story

This 'behind the story' commentary was released in 2021 as part of a podcast. When I was sixteen or seventeen, that was when I wrote my first science fiction story. But the process of being a storyteller is something I cannot explain in a logical way, nor do I fully understand why I tell the stories that I do. My stories come from somewhere, but I am not conscious of where that place may be.

04

Based on a True Story

This is controversial science fiction time travel storytelling unlike what you may have encountered elsewhere. And yes, this genuinely is based on a true story.

05

Stoking the Culture Wars

The young gay men whom you will meet in this storytelling are devious and deceitful. They are required by their employer, MMDI, to use deviousness and deceitfulness to succeed in the sexual manipulation of everyday men in the past on Earth who are not famous and whose names and personal actions never are preserved in any history books.

06

Men Living Deep Inside the Moon

In my illustrated science fiction novel Baja Clavius: Moon Men Deep Inside you can read about men living deep inside the moon and then using time-travel devices to work on missions on Earth. I selected the moon specifically as the location of an underground base where the fictional time travel agents live. Time travel as I imagined it will not work on Earth but works perfectly in the low lunar gravity.

07

Sexual Orientation of the Men of Tomorrow

Science fiction is famous for characters, behaviors, and ideas that venture way beyond the envelope of conventional storytelling. Yet, I came across prejudice from within the community of science fiction writers stemming from my choice to write science fiction for gay men. A blogger refused service to me because he felt his readers would find my gay science fiction writing objectionable.

08

Provocative Science Fiction

I accept that my creative works will not appeal to a 'mass audience' in the gay world. I use the bara genre (originally from Japan) to be provocative with deliberate intent. Provoking readers is a very different process compared to provoking viewers with visual works.

09

Queer Sci-Fi

We gay men typically must settle for stereotypes and hackneyed clichés in sci fi storytelling that has gay male characters. But I chose to challenge the norm when I wrote my time travel adventure called Baja Clavius: Moon Men Deep Inside.

10

Mexican or Latino Hero

Donald Trump's statements about Mexicans and Latinos originate within deep prejudices that are harbored by angry older white people in the United States. If you happen to maintain the same or similar prejudices against Mexicans or Latinos as Trump, then you should not read my science fiction novel, Baja Clavius.

11

Stop Living a Lie

My works as storyteller and illustrator Madeira Desouza began with a dawning light during what was a very dark time for me. I do not know where to look for what compels my creativity. I only know that I create because I must.

12

Swimming in Dark Waters

One of my readers told me something that shocked the hell out of me: He said he thought I may be fulfilling the role of a contemporary shaman. He said I seem to be able to dive in and swim in the dark waters of my subconscious and live to tell about what I see.

13

Thinking of God and Free Will

I am not the only writer whose science fiction storytelling depicts a world in which there is no God. My novel Baja Clavius tells the story of a world about 300 years from now in which a top-secret agency based deep inside the moon uses time travel to the past to control and manipulate people. The unfortunate people who get manipulated by the time travel agents have their free will taken from them.

14

Gay Science Fiction

If you're not satisfied with how gay men are portrayed in science fiction, you are not alone! I'm a gay male writer and digital illustrator. My illustrated science fiction Baja Clavius presents realistic gay male characters with no stereotyping or clichés.

15

Challenges for a Gay Science Fiction Author

From the very start, as a gay male author, I accepted that I would invite challenges by writing science fiction for gay men. I even considered that I should write science fiction for straight readers—readers who are gay are fewer in number compared to the population of straight readers. But I went ahead and wrote science fiction for gay male readers because that's what I am.

16

Why Is Gay Science Fiction for Men So Unusual?

As Oliver Keane accurately stated the problem: '…it seems a rather glaring failing to exclude the minority aspects of human sexual identity from the vast majority of science fiction stories.' I have struggled as a gay male science fiction writer to attract an audience for my work that depicts gay men in time travel adventures.

17

Further Adventures: The Sequel

In episode 1 of Baja Clavius: Dream Time for Moon Men the lead character Lex Sarkis is presented. He's an attractive young gay man from Kansas. Against his will Lex gets pulled into an extraordinary time travel adventure. It all starts when he travels on a work assignment to write about a notorious sex entertainment ranch in Nevada where male hosts service only male clients.

This serialized story continues the science fiction time travel adventures from Baja Clavius: Moon Men Deep Inside by Madeira Desouza.
